explorer crashes when opening some big avi files..

hi, i've had a look around but i havent managed to find anything myself so im
hoping someone can help me out. I wasnt sure where to post this as i wasnt
sure if it was a video problem or windows problem so sorry if its in the
wrong place.

right basically, when i try to watch some .avi files, explorer crashes out
when i enter the same directory of the file before i even open it. however i
have opened 1 before but it still crashes along with media player crashing.

basically a warning box pops up asking me to send the error to microsoft or
not, after i click explorer reloads. in the end i just have to delete the
file. This is starting to annoy me as its happening to a lot of programs i
try to watch.

i mentioned this somewhere else and they thought it was something to do with
the .avi previewer, so they gave me a link to a fix. but this did not work. i
also turned all the fancy stuff off so i was in classic view but the problem
still happens.

if anybody can help me solve this i would really appreciate it, thank you
for your time reading this..

hi thanks for your response, but i just went to the download section of
microsorfts site typed in 822430 and it came back with no results! is this
hotfix no more?

also i just typed it in on the search microsoft.com, i got 1 result, it
didnt sound exactly like the response im getting as i dont just get hang
time. explorer pops up an error and then restarts but without shutting the
down the pc.

also on that page all it said was to download the latest service pack but i
am already on service pack 2 and i download all updates as they pop up on my
comp.

Have these AVI clips ever played OK? Is it a new problem with vid clips
that once played fine?
Have you tried Gspot? http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
