Explorer & application slow in forming folder tree

How can I speed up access to a folder tree showing my jpeg and movie
data?

My jpeg viewer is Acdsee version 3 and it takes a long time to load.
maybe 30 or 50 seconds. Acdsee seems to be spending a lot of time on
constructing the folder tree view.

If use Windows Explorer to go to the same folder then it too takes
far more time to create a folder tree than it would for other non-
jpeg folders.

I have a 160 GB hard drive for my jpeg files and it is about 85%
full. A typcial folder which I might open would be one level down
from the root and it might have 75,000 files organized in 70 folders.

How can I speed this up?

I should add to my original posting that I am running NTFS.
