Make folder tree default

Is there a way to set Windows Explorer so that it opens with the folders tree
pane on the left by default, rather than the "common tasks" pane?

This approach opens the folders tree; however, the next time I open My
Computer, it has returned to the "common tasks" view. I would like to not
have to change the setting every time I use Explorer.

My machine runs Windows XP SP3; I do not know if that makes a difference.

I've done some experimentation and found that there is an exception on my
machine. Although the "common tasks" appears when I open My Computer, My
Documents, My Pictures, and so forth, the folders tree appears when I follow
Start>All Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer. I wonder what makes the
difference.

To set the Folder Tree as default:

1. Open "Folder Options" then select the "File Types" tab.

2. Scroll down to "(NONE) Folder" and click it, then click the "Advanced" button (at the bottom).

3. Click on "explore" then click the "Set Default" button.

4. OK, Apply, OK.
