exel.exe has generated errors.....

Problem & Fix!

The Problem:
I had a user running Win2K & Office 2000. Everytime she
attempted to open Excel she would get the error message
of "Excel.exe has generated errors....." and Excel would
not open. The strange part was if I logged on to her PC
as another user, Excel opened just fine.

The Fix:
I figured it had something to do with the user's local
profile, so this is what I tried. I went to c:\documents
and settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel.
I then renamed the "Excel" folder. You can probably
delete it also, but I wanted a fall-back just in case. I
figured that Excel would notice it was missing and just
recreate it. It worked, and Excel is fine now!!

Hope this helps someone out there!

I too was experiencing this identical problem and was
about to post a message asking for help when I ran across
Manny's reply. I tried his suggestion and it worked
great! Thank you Manny! Your reply has saved me big
time.

In my process of elimination, I was hoping that I would be
able to reinstall only the MS Excel program, but evidently
one must reinstall the entire MS Office suite of programs
(including Outlook) which I would prefer not to because of
all my email inbox items I now have setup to my needs,
thus I did not proceed with this option. Then, I was
thinking the obvious that it must be a virus causing this,
thus I ran several virus scans on all of my files on my
system and they all have reported no viruses found.

I am in the middle of creating my 2004 budget proposal and
when I was not able to open Excel, I went into panic
mode. My deadline is tomorrow and now that I am back up
and in business, I can now finalize my numbers and finish
my proposal. Although I have lost two days, and I will
have a busy day ahead of me today... Manny's reply has
given me back the tool I need to complete my budget. The
rest is now up to me. So one big thanks to Manny for
taking the time to post his reply. It has saved me.
Thanks again... This is great!

Not a problem EV, you're very welcome.

Anytime I figure out another piece of the Microsoft
Puzzle, it's a major victory!

I say spread the knowledge!!!
