.exe and .lnk file assoc

When I double click on a program, any program, in Explore I
get the error message:

Windows cannot open this file:
File: regedit.exe
To open this file, Windows needs to know what program
created it. etc.

I thought the problem was just that Windows didn't
recognise .lnk files (all the Quick Launch icons are
stuffed) until I tried to "Run" regedit.

The funny thing is that I restored the file association for
Word docs and when I double click on them in Explorer it
now opens Word. Also, I can get access to Explorer from
"Start -> My Documents" but if I double click on
explorer.exe in the windows directory I get the above error.

The OS is Windows XP Pro
The machine is a laptop, Compaq Presario 2500

Any help would be apprecaited

Start with these:

EXE and LNK Fix for Windows XP - Line 12
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Most welcome and thank you, Les. Glad all is well. :o)

Many Thanks,

Worked a treat!

You're wonderful!

Something has damaged the file association for .exe files. Go to
www.dougknox.com = click Win XP fixes, and get File association fixes,
near bottom on left
