Excel won't open "program has performed illegal operation"

Dave Wilko

I have the following problem with Excel loaded from a
genuine Office 2000 Professional CD (upgrade). I am
running Windows 98 SE, also strictly genuine. It all ran
well until a while ago I had to reformat my computer and
reload all the programs. Since then I always receive the
same message (see below). I have uninstalled Office and
reloaded several times, including uninstalling any updates
I downloaded (that I could identify). The problem is only
in Excel, the other Office programs run OK.
Any ideas please?

Dave
