Excel saving files to a temporary file when doing a file save

Excel 97 - that runs on Windows 98 or above keeps
crashing when doing a save -the file is saved as a
temporary file (no ext - usually 8 random char/# combo) -
forcing the user to use all file types and renameing the
temp file to the orginal file name

is there a fix - it is VERY ANNOYING

PLEASE HELP!!!!
