EXcel Mouse problem

Our student lab is currently running Office XP. The problem is with Excel
though. On a number of PC's after starting Excel and clicking anywhere on the
worksheet the mouse seems to lock the left-click down and refuses to release
causing a highlighting of any cells under the mouse pointer which expoands
and follows the pointer. It is impossible to stop. The only way to get out is
to end the Excel task in the tasklist. The problem is not to specific users
but to the specific pc so no mattewr who loggs onto the PC the problem
persists.

Re-installing the office package does not fix the problem. SP3 for Office Xp
installed does not solve the problem.

I found 3 references to this same problem from other forums on the inbternet
through google but no solutions. Any suggestions or fixes?

F8 has no effect. Had a look at the mouse properties on control panel. Tried
toggling the clicklock option on and off, no effect. The problem does get
fixed by redoing the entire PC, ghosting from a master copy of the O/S and
software but the problem re-appears at random. Re-imaging the PC's are not an
option as the time to re-image is too long and we can't afford to puill
workstations out of operation for extended times again and again as we have a
limited number for a massive student userbase. I need a fix that can restore
Excel to working in the shortest possible time.

There is another conversation on this subject dated 08/22/2005 titled "Can't
deselect when highlight multiple cells with ..." That conversation toward
blaming the fact that the users had USB mouses. I have a USB mouse and
plugged it into the PS2 port. That did not fix the problem either. The
solutions of rebulding and ghosting the PC seems to be very involved and not
do not have a permanent effect. Please let me know if you have a permantent
solution.

I previously worte that I had that problem too. I was using a USB mouse. I
did two things to fix the problem. First I plugged the mouse in the PS2
port. But that did not work by it self. Secondly, later I downloaded the
lates version of the logitech mouse driver. Then the problem was fixed. I
have not tried to go back to the USB port since it does eat a little more
processing time (I think).
