Excel hyperlink loses its path on save (2)

I have a Hyperlink in my worksheet that points to a document on our network
server, but when I save this file and email it to the group the hyperlink
changes to point to my hard drive where the document is not located.

Tools -> Options -> General -> Web Options -> Files -> Uncheck update links
on save doesn't work. Also, I erased the file default location as this was
pointing to my hard drive; this seemed to work for awhile but not any more.

A few people have said that this has stopped a similar problem from occurring.
Maybe it'll help you--but you'll have to test it to make sure.

In xl2003 menus:
File|Properties|Summary Tab|Hyperlink Base
change it to C:\
(something that's always available)

In xl2007:
Click on the Office button
Choose Prepare, then properties.
Then use the arrow on the Document Properties dropdown
Choose Advanced Properties
And then change the hyperlink base on the Summary tab.


I like to use the =hyperlink() worksheet function. It has never failed me this
way:

=hyperlink("file:////yourpathtothe/something.xxx","Click me")

In properties, I changed it to point to the subfolder on the network server
where the hyperlinked document is located (not C, which is my local hard
drive as this didn't work). So far this seems to work. I apreciate this
suggestion as well as the hyperlink formula approach as well!

I would have guessed that the C: would work better. It's worked for quite a few
other people.

I've tried to use the =hyperlink function in excel 2002 but I'm not
sure how the pathname should be written.

We have two computers on a network, imaginatively named PC1 & PC3 (PC2
was retired sometime ago). An excel file sites on PC1, as do the
documents we want to link to. We need to be able to open the excel
file and the links from PC3. Both relative file paths and setting the
file root in excel have not worked. I saw that the =hyperlink function
was suggested as a solution to similar problems and thought I'd give
it a shot.

I have tried a variety of pathnames in the =hyperlink function but
always receive the error "Cannot open the specified path".

I searched the web but couldn't find anything that described how to
write the file path correctly in excel. Can anyone tell me the correct
syntax?

If those files that you're hyperlinking to exist on the individual pc's, I
_THINK_ you'll have to do some folder sharing. And then you could use those
shared folders on the other pcs.

You may want to ask in a forum dedicated to windows (include your version in
your question).

But it may be easier to find a network drive (are you on a network???) and
create a share that all of the pc's can access. Then you can use the UNC path
or even map the share and use a drive letter in the =hyperlink() formula:

=hyperlink("\\share\path\filename.xls","Click me")
or
=hyperlink("m:\filename.xls","click me")
