Excel creates .XAR & .TMP files on network drive

Hello,

We're having a weird issue with one of our shares on our server. We
have a share (\\server\share) and within this share we have multiple
folders with subfolders and whatnot but this is the primary share that
is mapped to all our users via login script. Within some of the
subfolders within this share there are excel files. What's happening is
that for some reason, we'er getting a lot of .xar and .tmp files appear
in the root of the share (\\server\share) even though there are no
Excel files on the root of the share, the only objects there are
folders with subfolders. I know that .xar files have to do with Excel
and its autorecovery feature, but why would these files show up in the
root of the share and not the subfolder where the Excel files are
located? any info would be great!

The location of the .xar files is controlled by each user.
Tools|options|save tab|autorecover save location

I'm guessing that at least one of the users has changed this setting to point at
that folder.

..tmp files are created in the windows temporary file by excel.

But there are other things that can cause these .tmp files to get created.

One person posted that they saw files that had names like: ~RF26c83af.TMP.

It was caused by AVG.

You can read her description in this thread:

A while ago, someone posted back that uninstalling something called "Panda
ClientShield" fixed a similar problem.

Even if you're not running "Panda ClientShield", you could try disabling the
Antivirus program to see if the problem goes away.
