Opening files takes over 2 mins within excel

This problem is a little bit complex but I will try and be as clear as I can.
Infrastructure is windows/intel we run 2003 RC2 server and XP Pro SP2. From
one of our clusters we have a share lets call it share1 so on
\\server1\share1\1stsubfolder\2ndsubfolder\Excel\user, There occurs a very
strange problem:

Users have mapped drives pointing to the second subfolder. If you navigate
through windows explorer to the user subfolder and open .xls files by double
clicking on them they open instantly whether you use Excel 2000 or 2003.
However if you navigate to an excel file from within excel 2003 and open it,
it will take over 2½ mins to open! This effects users on different subnets
but always using Excel 2003

I have checked that the share and NTFS permissions are correct. I have
recreated the excel share copying the data from the old folder. If the files
in question are coppied to the second subfolder the files open no problem.

It seems strange that this problem only occurs with the use of Excel 2003
and it does not occur when using Excel 2000 in fact Excel 200 opens the files
instantly. I have had a little success in rectifying the problem by switching
of DDE when opening .xls file however this has its own problems when opening
files from within explorer

Any ideas?

I forgot to mention that for the 2 ½ mins that I am waiting for the excel
file to load up the Excel process runs at 100% on one of the cores on my PC
