Excel 97 cant open workbook

Here is the error message I get:
'file.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read only, or you may be
trying to access a read only location. Or, the server the document is stored
on may not be responding.

I use the file everyday, its on my pc and I dont know anything about 'read
only'
nor have I changed the properties of the file. It worked fine yesterday, and
nothing has been changed that I know of. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having the exact same problem as Ken. Does anyone know how to fix this?

There are two possibilities :
1. The file was not closed properly after you open it for editing.
2. The file was saved to another location (save as) and the original file
was left "open".

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but how do I fix the file if it was not closed correctly?

Any help on opening files that may not have been closed correctly and now
won't open?

Looks like nobody knows Steve...I got my file to open in MS Word, then I did
the conversion back to Excel...Its not pretty, but its a start. Most of the
info is there, but no times or numbers made the conversion. Hope that helps a
little
