unable to open Excel files

These are attachments in Exchange/Outlook, error:

file.xls cannot be accessed, the file may be read only or
the server the document is stored on is not responding.
retry or cancel

clicking cancel I then get "! unable to read file"

get the same when trying to open with Excel viewer. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Also installed Office 2003 SP1 which did not resolve this

What version of Excel? I developed this problem with Excel
97 when I upgraded my web browser to IE 6. I don't know
what the connection could be but that is what happened.
