Share Workbook error

Ever built anything in Excel (2000) and it has not gone to plan? Well I just
have and it’s being a pain in the behind. This is the first time I have used
the “Share Workbook†function and in may be the last.

I have created multiple shared workbooks that contain information that is
accessed and updated by around 20 users. Linked to these separate workbooks
is a summary Workbook that (a) provides summary information updated from all
the workbooks when it is opened (b) contains macros that open the other
sheets so that the users use it as a access point to open the other sheets.
The purpose of keeping the sheets separate was to reduce file size as they
are accessed from a remote connection.

With the Shared Workbook function activated I now interminably get two errors.
Error 1: ‘Workbook name’ cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or
you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document
is stored on may not be responding.

With error 1 I can find no way to access the file. I am able to copy it from
the server onto my desktop but the same error is still displayed. The only
option is to delete the file and restore from backup.

Or

Error: 2: File is locked. In order to save changes to the file, you can
either close the file before making any changes and then re-open it, use Save
As (File menu) to save the file using another filename, or turn off Shared
Workbooks and then save the file.

With this error the workbook contents is displayed but closing and opening
the file just brings up the same error. If I re-save under another name the
file opens but then displays “Unable to read file†when I attempt to save. If
I attempt to turn of the Share Workbook function an error is displayed “This
file is locked. Try the command again later.†The only repair option I have
found is to copy the data out of the workbook and paste into a new template.
Interestingly it does not allow me to close the Workbook on the first attempt
displaying “The file is locked†and only shuts on the second attempt.

Has anyone had experience of this sort of problem and dare I ask have a
soulution?

Hi Simon,
Has anyone had experience of this sort of problem and dare I ask have a
soulution?

I can only confirm that I have read similar problems reported so often,
that I always advise against sharing workbooks.

Unless you use the file with as much as *1* users.

I am getting the exact same error message but with a password protected file
on tha shared drive. Everyone else can only use it as read only. I still am
unable to access any of the information on these files and IT does not know
what to do. Any help from MVP's out there???
