Excel 97 And Windows Xp

I have recently installed office97 on a new Acer laptop
PC which runs under Windows XP.

If i try to access the Tools, Options menu item, excel
crashs and shuts down.

I would be most grateful if anyone can advise on a fix
for this problem.
