Excel 2002 crashes when attempting to Bold any cell

The problem happens when running Excel 2002 on a Sony
VAIO laptop running Windows XP (All critical updates
installed)

The laptop is connected to an HP desktop running Windows
98SE (All critical updates installed) via a wireless
network. This computer has an HP OfficeJet 7130
connected via USB. This printer is set up for sharing.

The system operates normally as long as the laptop is
connected to the network. When the laptop is removed
from the network I experience a repeatable problem with
Microsoft Excel. When selecting any cell and then
clicking on the "B" icon to make the cell bold Excel
crashes. This happens with any Workbook, even a
completely blank one. When connected to the network this
does not happen.

I can eliminate the problem by removing the printer
described above from the printer list on the laptop (this
is the only printer I have). Excel operates normally
when the printer is removed.

Printing to the shared printer from the laptop works,
although significantly slower than with the previous
configuration using an HP OfficeJet G55, which was
replaced by the 7130. Printing from Excel is especially
slow.
