Excel 2000 crashes on XP startup

For some reason, when I login to my XP Pro SP1 laptop, I get an error
message from Excel. Only problem is, I don't start Excel. It's not in my
start menu nor can I find it using msconfig. I suspect it's due to some
other program that interfaces with it (I have some OCR software that allows
you to dump scanned text directly into Office). But I have no way of
knowing who the culprit is.

Is there any way of tracing down what's causing Excel to launch, then crash?
I don't relish the idea of uninstalling software bit by bit until the error
(hopefully) goes away. Thanks.

I'll have to add a second user and see if it persists. Haven't tried safe
mode, it
wasn't crashing windows, so I thought maybe there was quick-n-easy way to
see what called up excel. I take it there isn't.
