Win XP MCE v2002 Media Center crashes / freezes

I have an HP Pavilion Media Center TV PC, model m7640n, AMD Athlon X2
w/ 2GB RAM. The machine came with MCE pre-installed (why a 32 bit
operating system on a 64 bit processor I don't know). The machine
performs very well as a desktop computer, with the exception of having
to restart every few days in order to free up the available RAM.

The problem I am having has been with the system from day 1. Live TV
will run, but after a while, the system looses all keyboard or mouse
control and I have to re-start the machine to clear it. In addition,
any attempt to access or refresh the guide results in the media center
crashing and terminating. Other features of media center seem to work,
although I have not used them very much. I don't know if the crashes
are due to a hardware or software problem and any help would be
appreciated.

TIA.

Discount stores are not the best place to get customer service, also,
at the time I was more interested in using the computer for
engineering programs, which work just fine. Now that I am retired, it
would be nice to be able to use the MCE functions. If I can't resolve
the issue then I will probably dump MCE and install a 64 bit operating
system.
