everything gone after reboot from "stand by"

Hi,

Here's what I've got going on. Computer is running XP, updates are current.
Running ZoneAlarm Security Suite for anti-virus, firewall, etc. I also use
Bluecoat's K9 web protection service which has caused compatibility problems
in the past.

Not sure what happened exactly, but I will explain as best as I can. My son
uses the computer for online schooling. He likes to surf around and play
games, hence the K9 service. My wife caught him playing online games last
thursday. He says he did not download anything. Short time later, wife for
some reason put computer into Stand By mode, we normally never use it as our
keyboard does not have a power button. A couple of hours later, son went to
use the computer. As there was no way to bring it out of stand by mode, he
shut down the computer by holding in the power button and then restarted it.

When computer came on there was a error message that "personal settings
could not be loaded". Settings had all reverted back to default. Also,
nothing is stored in the start menu, some of the links to programs are
missing or have been moved to other folders, icons on desktop change
locations whenever computer is restarted, and everything takes about 15 min
to start up after it has been clicked on. For example, click on start, then
control panel, wait 15 min, control panel finally opens.

I have run spybot, malwarebytes, ad-aware, and windows malicious software
remover. Only malwarebytes found anything to remove, and it was only one
item. ZoneAlarm will not open, so I have not run their spyware/virus
programs. I have also visited the Conficker Eye Chart at,
eyechart.sie.isc.org. All images appear on the screen.

Thanks for your time.

Try a system restore to a date prior to the onset of the problem.

Thanks for the quick response Ron. I have already tried a system restore.
Actually I have tried it about 5 times, each time going further back in
time. No luck. Any other ideas?
