Event Error 10005 - MSI Installer; Can't install Adobe Reader 6.0.1

I can't install Adobe Reader 6.0.1 on my Windows 2000 Professional PC. I
keep getting the follow event application log message, then the
installation stops, and all installation progress is reversed to a
complete noninstallation. I have successfully downloaded
AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe using either Internet Explorer or Netscape.
However, the installation problem is the same with either download.

Any Ideas???

I have a similar problem and error message in trying to install Norton
System Works 2004. Norton techs suggested that msiexec was corrupted and I
should get the MS installer for it and re-install msiexec. But in invoking
the installer program I get the message: "Specified Service already exists"
and it closes without installing a new msiexec.exe and I get the same
error/event messages when I again try to install Norton. I have tried
renaming msiexec.exe in ../System32 but the same message appears when I try
to re-install. I have checked the permissions on the Installer folder and
they are as you recommend.
