Problems installing Adobe Acrobat Reader.

C

Chris Mitchell

Running Win XP Home.

Downloaded AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe, from Adobe's site, but when I try to
install it, taking the defaults all the way I get:

Error 1324. Path Program Files or the volume is invalid..

Yet in Windows Explorer I can see C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat
6.0\Reader\, which is where my current version (AcroRd32.exe) resides!

I've tried creating a new folder C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0.1\, then
specified this as the location to install to but still get the same error
message.

The reason I'm trying to install a new version, is that when I visit sites
that have .pdf files I can't view them in MS IE 6.0.2800, all I get is a
little box with a red x is it in the top LH corner of the browser window.
However I can download the .pdf file and then open it on my machine.

Any suggestions on how to resolve these problems would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks.

if you don't need those exporting features in acrobat 6, I suggest you
to install 4.05 instead, it renders PDF very fast and works well here,
just google "rs405eng.exe"

Did you install some whacky tool bar?
Thanks.

Or download "AcroReader51_ENU.exe" too. Anything is better than Acrobat 6.0!

Uninstall the old version first, then try installing the new version.

Tried to uninstall Adobe Reader 6.0, but got the same error message, "Error
1324. The path Program Files or the volume is invalid. Please enter it
again." So it looks like something may be wrong with the path or volume,
which puts me in yet another area of uncertainty! How would I fix the path
or volume?

I'm not sure this is relevant but I suspect it might be I don't have the Win
XP Home disk - my son lost it!

TIA.

Did you move or rename folders or files associated with AR60
since it was installed? If so, the Uninstall program will be looking
for them where they were originally.

What is in both directories now, the 6.0 versus the 6.0.1 one?
It looks as if their install does a partial uninstall of the old version
without being asked to anyway.

If you go to Adobe's User to User Forums for Acrobat Reader
and search with 1324 you will see the same problem description.
I didn't bother wading through all the threads to see if there was
a better answer than the one I am giving. However, it should be
noted that this is off-topic for this newsgroup.

Good luck

It would be a waste of time to fix the dumb bug in acrobat's setup
program. Just remove the "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat XXX" and
install version 4.05.

Just burn yourself :)
