Error with User Accounts function in Control Panel

G

Guest

When clicking 'Change the way users log on or off' an error dialog box
appears stating "Automation server can't create object". After clicking OK
the page is still displayed for the Welcome and Fast User Switching options,
but with both deselected, although I have both functioning in my settings. At
this point, if tick/untick either/both option(s), after clicking 'Change the
way users log on or off' again both options are shown deselected. Also, all
help options on the left show the same error message, after which, IE opens a
blank page. I don't know whether there could be a connection, but I just
tried the same thing on my other PC, and just as I clicked 'Change the way
users log on or off', my security software warned me of a suspicious script
execution, which I think was called mshta.exe and I think mentioned trying to
run RegRead. I allowed it and User Accounts worked fine, and checked
afterward and no viruses etc. I'm trying to turn off Fast User Switching in
order to use the Offline Files function.

I would suspect either the Winlogon.exe, or msgina.dll file was corrupt.
MsConfig.exe will allow you to "Expand File" to replace those.

G

Guest

How exactly does the 'Expand File' function work, and what are the exact
purposes of the Winlogon.exe and msgina.dll files? I don't want to be working
in the dark!

A Repair setup of XP might be more comfortable for you.
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Winlogon creates the Welcome screen, and MSGina is used to access Domain
membership (and turns off the welcome screen as a side effect)
Expand file expects you to know the location of the original file, and point
at it. It already knows where you got it. (Probably a service pack, but maybe
the original xp setup files)

I downloaded your script. I wasn't advised to download Windows Script, but
the file didn't run. The following error message appeared when double-clicked:

That did the trick - along with your fixuseracc.vbs. However, when selecting
Tools > Folder Options in Windows Explorer and clicking Offline Files, I'm
still left with a message telling me that I have Fast User Switching enabled
and advised to deselect it by clicking on 'Change the way users log on or
off' in User Accounts. I attempted selecting it, found the Welcome option
only selected (as I want it), but selected/saved Fast User Switching, then
opened it again to deselect it but found it was already deselected. It also
made no difference to Windows Explorer.

Alternately, to disable Fast User Switching:

Set the value of the AllowMultipleTSSessions registry entry to 0. This entry is found in the following registry subkey:

Perfect! Now I'm just having difficulty with what I set out to do in the
first place. Everything mentioned so far (as you would have guessed) has been
on XP Pro SP2 - on which I've made the Shared Documents available on my LAN.
It's on my second PC (with XP Home SP2) that I want to set up either Offline
Files or some sort of caching setup for when my main PC is off. But although
both OS have Sync Manager, XP Home seems to show no sign of the Offline Files
function, either as a tab in Folder Options, or in Help and Support. And yet
the Sync Manager is for files that have been made available offline. What am
I missing?

Another issue that I not only need the answer to, but may be connected to the
existing one. In my first message in this thread I mentioned an error when
opening User Accounts on my second PC. I just opened User Accounts on PC 2
again and the same thing happened, although this time I've got in-depth
details from my security software. It states:

File: mshta.exe
Activity: The script is attempting to call the RegRead method within the
IWshShell3 object.
File path: mshta.exe
Status: The execution has been stopped.

If I click Allow to execute the script then User Accounts will run any of
the help links on the left (unlike previously in Pro) and the Welcome option
is ticked but Fast User Switching unticked.

Having noticed the absence of the option for Fast User Switching when
logging off in Pro, now that that issue has been rectified, it was clear to
me that it shouldn't be there in my Home edition either, considering that the
option isn't selected in User Accounts.

Won't the previous guidelines that you gave me work in Home as they did in

That did the trick - along with your fixuseracc.vbs. However, when selecting
Tools > Folder Options in Windows Explorer and clicking Offline Files, I'm
still left with a message telling me that I have Fast User Switching enabled
and advised to deselect it by clicking on 'Change the way users log on or
off' in User Accounts. I attempted selecting it, found the Welcome option
only selected (as I want it), but selected/saved Fast User Switching, then
opened it again to deselect it but found it was already deselected. It also
made no difference to Windows Explorer.

The Mobsync.exe (Sync Manager tool) in XP Home Edition allows you sync web pages, but not the files/folders with a network PC.

What am
I missing?

As I haven't heard from you I thought I'd try again! I just want to confirm
whether previous advice, which worked with Pro, will apply to Home. I've
repeated what I said before:

Another issue that I not only need the answer to, but may be connected to
the existing one. In my first message in this thread I mentioned an error
when opening User Accounts on my second PC. I just opened User Accounts on PC
2 again and the same thing happened, although this time I've got in-depth
details from my security software.

Won't the previous guidelines that you gave me work in Home as they did in
Pro? i.e. fixuseracc.vbs, Windows Script 5.6, and the value change in the
registry - all of which solved the issues in Pro?

Thanks. Even after going through the aforementioned motions, though, I found
(on both PCs) that if I click on 'Change the way users log on or off', even
with Fast User Switching deselected, the window which includes it when
logging off (although the option doesn't function) still appears, and the
only way to make only the log off option appear is via the Registry Editor,
as you also suggested. Perhaps an as-yet-to-be rectified bug of the User
