User Accounts

Out of the blue yesterday, my wife told me that our computer would not let
her choose log off, or I should say, it would not work. I went to control
panel -> User Accounts and tried to click on "change the way users log on or
off", but when I click on that, it shows the screen, but it puts and error
box up that states simply "The specified module could not be found." I can't
find any reference to this occurring, and fast user switching service is
showing that it is started. I found a similar reference about user switching
on an MVP site that provided a VB script, so I tried running that and it
errored off saying module could not be found. I have no idea what module I
should be looking for or how I can correct this. I tried restoring back 2
days, when log off was definitely working, but it doesn't seem to have
corrected the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry, I forgot to point out it is WinXP Pro SP2, fully updated. I don't see
anything in event viewer that references anything to do with this either.
Thanks again.

Hi Johnnycat,

I hope you used my script here: (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/useraccerror.htm). If you received the error "One or more of the scripting runtimes are missing" then it would mean that a scripting runtime DLL is missing from your system. You can download and install the Windows Script 5.6 from the following Microsoft Web site:

Download details: Windows Script 5.6 for Windows XP and Windows 2000:

It took me a bit of time to actually get back to this, but your script worked
great. If you don't mind my asking, what causes this type of problem? I
haven't run into it before and am curious as to a possible cause, if one is
even known. Thanks again for the help.

Glad that helped! No idea what caused this problem, Johnnycat.
