Can't do Fast User Switching for some reason

W

wannabe

When I check the "Use Fast User Switching" checkbox in the User
Accounts, Change the way users log on and off and then click apply
options, it doesn't seem to work. The checkbox is clear again after I
reopen the Change the way users log on and off screen.

Help appreciated

Ramesh, MS-MVP

Click Start, Run and type Services.msc
Double-click "Terminal Services" from the list
Set it's Startup type to "Manual"
Close Services.msc applet and restart Windows.

Now, try enabling Welcome Screen, and Fast User Switching options.

I have the same problem as wannabe, and "Terminal Services" is not on my
list. what do I do?

For Windows XP SP2 systems only:

Download termservice.reg from my site, and save to Desktop. Right-click the
file and choose "Merge". Missing "Terminal Services" should be restored.
Restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

ok I downloads the "Terminal Services" and set it to manual. But in the
process, I clicked the button "Startup..." at the top and the list changed,
and when I pressed it again, it changed back. this isn't bad is it? Also,
when i went to control panel, switch users etc. the check for use fast user
switching still isn't checked when i look back at it. the problem is that my
computer was about to crash and my friend took it to get fixed by a guy and
when I got it back all the programs were gone. so I took it back and he put
some of the things back on. but ever since then, i haven't been able to
switch users. when i go to start logoff, there is only the option to log-off
and not one to switch users. also, it is in the old version of windows ( the
box is more square and gray). so what should I do now?

Did you reboot once after applying that REG file?

Which list are you talking about?
Are you able to start the service manually?

Set the "Fast User Switching Compatibility" service to Manual, and reboot.

Yes, I have rebooted. And the fast user switching is not there. Both the
Terminal Services and Fast User Swtiching are set to manual. When I clicked
them to start, I got error messages: " Could not start the Fast User
Switching Compatibility service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency
service or group failed to start." also, for the terminal services, "Error
1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run in does
not implement the service."

Jane,

If you have Service Pack 2 installed, then run the fix here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/termsvcfix.zip

It rectifies the Terminal Service setting in the registry automatically.

Ok, I'm really sorry. That didn't work either. It has to do something with
what the computer "fixer" did, because I haven't been able to use fast user
switching since then. Do I need to take my computer to another professional?
Do you have any other ideas? Thanks

R

Ramesh, MS-MVP

Try rebooting once and start the Terminal Service & Fast User Switching
services. If not, try a System Restore rollback.

Ok, what exactly happens during a System Restore rollback? Will it affect any
other aspects of my computer?

R

Ramesh, MS-MVP

Yes. Other aspects may be affected. That's the reason one should rollback to
a state when the system was working fine.

How to restore the operating system to a previous state in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084/

You can use the System Restore tool to return your computer to a previous
working state. System Restore takes a "snapshot" of critical system files
and of some program files. System Restore stores this information as restore
points. You can use these restore points to return Windows XP to a previous
state.

How will I know how far to rollback? Because my computer was having a lot of
troubles when I had Fast User Switching capability, so I don't want those
other bad things. How does this work?
