Error starting Windows XP

I have an error message on a blue screen that appears
during the windows start up but the error and the screen
disappears quickly so I cannot see the message.

Can anyone tell me how to stop the screen from changing
so I can retrieve the message.

Next Startup tap F8. If you get a Menu select Safe Mode with Command
Prompt. Do a system restore from there
