Error running Word after upgrade

I recently upgraded from Win 98 to Win2kPro. All of my
Office 2000 applications that were previously installed
stopped working. I've tried reinstalling Office, but I
get a error that the application must be installed to
run. Control Panel will not let me remove it. It asks
for the Office disks. Even with the office disk
installed it still will not remove it.

I'm thinking I have to flatten the HD and reload
everything from scratch. Of course I don't want to do
that if I don't have to.

Can I go into the registry and clean it all up, or what?

Any suggestions?

If you upgraded W98-->W2k instead of a clean install, you are one of
many who experience a host of such problems, and this may not be the
only one you'll find. It's much much better to bite the bullet up front
and do a clean install, during which no errors and mild corruptions will
be propagated. In fact, oddly, a clean install is probably a timesaver
in a large number of cases. You can do a clean install with an update
CD; at some point it'll just ask for a valid install CD for an eligible
prior system, and when it sees that, it'll keep on going.

Just noticed the ersaer app not exactly the one I was thinking of. There was a KB article in spring of '99 that had a small app
that you could download that removed every trace of Office and setup would function correctly afterward. The link I sent requires
setup to be running and I'm not sure you'll be able to use it.

Can't find it. Meant Spring 2000 for KB article. Sorry, it worked perfectly to correct your problem.

Norm,
I had the exact same problem except it arose going from Me
to Windows 2K - all Office products install prior to
upgrade ceased to funtion and generated an error message
when I tried to reinstall from the installation CD. Did
you ever find a solution. William (e-mail address removed)
wrote of the problem that once we start installing the
update patches it permanently changes registry and it is
impossible to go back to the base version and the
installer erases the history. What we need from Microsoft
is a download of the Installer program for Office 2000 SR-
1, then we can start over.
