Error popup: "WINDOWS IS SHUTTING DOWN"

2-week old Dell 8300 with WinXP Pro:
Unexpected error popup message says something like:
"Windows is shutting down" and then goes through a
countdown while it says to save and close all applications,
and then it shuts down.
I assume this is basically a "crash"? What causes it?
How do you keep it from happening?
Thanks in advance!

Does the popup message contain the words "...WINNT Authority..." or
something?
The countdown time is 60 seconds, right?

Yes. I've since learned that it involves the RPC and is a resul
of a virus. There are several solutions offered in other forums
Thanks!
