Error: Microsoft Shared Fax Driver not installed

I use XP Home, SP2, IE7 and have been using the Microsoft Fax function to
send faxes in the past with no problems. However about 2 weeks ago when I
tried to send a fax (print a webpage to the fax printer in IE7), the "Send
Fax Wizard" opens, but when I click on "Next", nothing happens, and then the
program does not respond.
I tried checking the "Printers and Faxes", the "Fax Console" opens OK, but
the Status at the bottom of the Fax Console says "Refreshing". Then later an
error message said that the "Microsoft SHared Fax printer" driver is not
installed.

I tried removing the Fax component in Control Panel> Add Remove Programs>
Add Remove Windows Components> unchecked the "Fax Service" box. Restart
computer. Then check back the "Fax service box". Still have same problem.

The last time that I recall being able to successfully print to a fax was at
the beginning of Dec. 2006, and since then I had only done Windows Automatic
Update which included a couple of Windows XP Security Updates. I have Zone
Alarm, but I have not changed anything in it, and I was able to successfully
print before with Zone Alarm installed.

When I was trying to install and uninstall Fax today, there was a time when
I was able to open Fax Console and the status at bottom of page showed
"online", and I was able to send and receive faxes. However, after
restarting computer, cannot send faxes again, and still get the error message
for printer driver not installed.
A couple of times Zone Alarm said that Fax Console tried to act as Server,
and I granted it permission. I have also tried disabling Zone Alarm, but
still fax problem.

Can someone pls help? Thanks.

Add'l info on my fax problem:

I went to Control Panel> Admin Tools> Service> Fax, the Startup Type is
Automatic, but the Status is Stopping (this is after restart and I did not
click fax console or anything before checking this Status). When I looked in
the properties of Fax, the Start/Stop/Pause/Resume buttons are all grayed out.

Can someone please help? 'Coz I have been using this Fax function for
printing. Thanks.

Need to know what shows in Event Viewer and what happened when you tried to
reinstall Fax.

Hi,
At the suggestion of a friend, I have found a “temporary†solution to
starting the Fax function. Here are the steps that I took:

1. Go to Control Panel> Admin Tools> Services> Fax (at this point, the
Start/Stop/Pause/Resume buttons are grayed out on my screen, and cannot be
selected)
2. For Startup type, click Disabled
3. Reboot computer
4. Go to Control Panel> Admin Tools> Services> Fax
5. For Startup type, click Manual
6. The Start button is black, while the Stop/Pause/Resume buttons are grayed
out
7. Click Start
8. A message that says “This service started and stopped automatically......â€
9. The Start button is still black, while the Stop/Pause/Resume buttons are
still grayed out.
10. Click Start again
11. Click OK to exit
12. Click “Printers and Faxesâ€, click Fax
13. Fax Console opens and the Status at the bottom says “Ready†(Previously
when I opened the Fax Console, the status at the bottom says “refreshing†and
could not work.)
14. OK to send faxes

Thanks to Russ Valentine for suggesting to look into Control Panel> Admin
Tools> Services to check in the first place.

While the fax function does not startup automatically and cannot function
normally as it had in the past for me, at least now I can still send faxes
using the above method until I can find a permanent solution.
