I recently started getting the following error message soon after windows xp
startup.

Main message is: "Can't run 16-bit windows program". Very scant explanation
says there is not enough memory, I have 256mb ram.

I tried searching Microsoft Technet and Knowledge Base for that message and
for a list of error messages, but found nothing.

I had installed some old software recently, but I deleted it all and the
message persists.

If anyone can shed light, I would appreciate some help.

Thanks

There are some programs that run a mix of 32bit and 16bit code. The bulk of
the program is 32bit but small features incorporated into the program are
still 16 bit (some of the messaging programs are examples). It's possible
that you're running something of this nature.
