error message

When I open Internet explorer an error message comes up
and I send a message to Microsoft. The message
is "Updater has encountered a problem and will be shut
down." I cured this by running msconfig and unchecking
the updater box, but what caused it in the first place?

There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite).
