error message

I use Windows XP-Pro and I have started getting an error message when the
computer is sitting idle for a while.

It comes from something called "notify alert" and says that it can't work.
There is always a short section of hex code.

Is this some program that is supposed to help the laptop 'go to sleep' or
what?

Any ideas where this message could be coming from?

Ok, the only clear reference I could find for "Notify Alert" was associated with McAfee. For the short term, try disabling your AV software and see if the problem continues.
