When I am on the Internet I get an error on a blue & gray screen that says
something like;

"host services for win32 has encountered a problem & needs to shut down"

I was told by dell to reinstall windows again, how come when there is a
problem they tell us to remove everything then reinstall windows again? I
think I already messed some of their disks up by reinstalling so many times
[old computer, & on this new computer I only had to reinstall everything
once, not going to do it again! I want to get enjoyment out of my computer &
not problems, thanks.]

You apparently already have NAV, but make sure it is a current version
and the definitions are updated. Then go through the following steps:

1) Scan in Safe Mode with current version (not earlier than 2003)
antivirus using updated definitions;

2) remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy
(www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com). These
programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
There is a new version of CWShredder from
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html. I would
not install the other Intermute programs, however. Alternately, there
are CoolWebSearch malware removal steps at
http://www.silentrunners.org/sr_cwsremoval.html. A combination of
HijackThis and About:Buster (http://www.majorgeeks.com) works well in
removing homepage hijackers. Always read the instructions before
running a spyware removal tool. Be sure to update these programs before
running, and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode.
Make sure you are able to see all hidden files and extensions (View tab
in Folder Options);

3) If you are running Windows ME or XP, you should disable/enable System
Restore because malware will be in the Restore Points. With ME, you
must disable System Restore completely. With XP, you can delete all but
the most recent (presumably clean) System Restore point from the More
Options section of Disk Cleanup (Run>cleanmgr).

4) make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update;

5) run a firewall.

After you are sure your computer is 100% spyware and virus-free, if the
problem continues, post back to this thread. Be sure to tell us how you
connect to the Internet, what changed between the time things worked
and the time they didn't, and what your troubleshooting results were.

Well that's really a question for Dell but my guess is
you have a technician who doesn't have a lot of clues or
is unable to get clues from you in order to give you a
more specific solution.

Once you get the OS the way you like it, start making
full backups regularly. That way, if anything goes
wrong, you can be right back where you were in a few
minutes with very little work.

You apparently already have NAV, but make sure it is a current version
and the definitions are updated. Then go through the following steps:

My files are up to date because it tells me to update every so often [whish
they update the list of people caught doing viruses]
1) Scan in Safe Mode with current version (not earlier than 2003)
antivirus using updated definitions;

2) remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy - do not have it on this
computer, NAV says on the box that it has it built in [somewhere - I think]
+ people say I do not need it.

I have xp & the restore part comes with it.
Restore because malware will be in the Restore Points. With ME, you
must disable System Restore completely. With XP, you can delete all but

Restore just takes you back to before the problem happened/started & it
stared when I first put my isp's CD in.

Qiestion:

I read on the windows help & suport part something about it [printer] & it
said to disconnect the printer then restart the computer then plug it back
in, so do you or anyone think this may work with the modem?
4) make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update;

Oh, just go to their site to do it, ok thanks!
5) run a firewall. NAV comes with a firewall

and the time they didn't, and what your troubleshooting results were.

I connect through a modem & the only change that been made was that I had to
reinstall the ISP CD [should I reinstal it again?]

My dad talked to him, dad told me the man @ dell was hard to understand. So
do you think I should e-mail dad & have him come out then call dell again?

My sister says when she calls dell she gets these furan people who tell her
this or that. so she calls to complain & they send her free stuff.

BACKING UP IS A MUST DUE TO VIRUSES, ALSO HELPS IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY DELETE A
PROGRAM & NEED TO REINSTALL IT

Dad 1 time told me [with this last problem with sp2], to install programs 1
@ a time & my ISP CD was working then, but forgot when it got in to
problems. So maybe there is something wrong with other programs or it is
looking for something but it is not there [just now remembered that the isp
cd was working ok until I put the other things back in!], or I deleted
something by mistake because some programs us things from other programs.

Thanks

Bob

My NAV did tell me about those 2 when I first ran it, but it told me how to
remove it too.

OK, from reading all your posts my best suggestion to you is to take the
machine to a good local computer repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA
type of store) and have them clean it and update it. This is not said
to hurt your feelings; I am just being practical. You need to have
someone who is knowledgeable take a look at the computer.

Or have a repair person come [under warranty] & check it. thanks ;-).

All a Dell repair person will do is format and reinstall as it was when
you got the system.
