error message

<windows root>//system 32//hal.dll, I lost my windows xp disk so I went ahead
and got the windows vista the guy at the store said I can use that to help
the corruption but when I put the disk in it wont let me do anything I cant
get into my windows at all with this message

You lost the XP install DVD. You went ahead and brought the Vista install
DVD to fix a problem with XP on the HD. Do you see something wrong with the
picture?

I went to a computer store and asked the guy if I needed another windows xp
disk or if I go ahead and update it to vista will that help with the
corrupted file and he told me it would help

I'm sorry you had a bad experience at the computer store. It is never a
good idea to try and upgrade onto a flawed installation. If your
computer can support Vista (and you need to check, not just assume) then
you can do a clean install of Vista. This will lose everything on the
computer so make sure you've backed up your data.

If your computer cannot support Vista, then return the Vista DVD to the
store for a full refund. Purchase a retail copy of XP or if you have an
OEM machine (Dell, Sony, HP, etc.) call the OEM and get a replacement
disk from them.
