while doing a disk cleanup on my second drive i noticed but didn't alarm me
that there was a 50M block in a temp file. but when i started my computer
back up it said that the hal.dll was misiing in the sytem32 folder....so i
put it in and then got the message that "load needed DLLs for kernel". doing
a net search i found some similar type problem with Admin syspreps where the
cleandisk was removing the cotents of sytem32 folder. Is there an easy way
to get my system back up short of reinstalling/repairing XP?

Your WHOLE system32 folder is gone on that install?? I have never heard of
that using Disk Cleanup. If the whole system32 folder is not gone you might
try to copy the contents of the dllcache folder to the system32 folder or
the dlls specified in the error message if any. other than that you are
probably going to need to do the repair/upgrade install which should
preserve your data, applications, and profile but require that you install
first your service pack and then all the nodded security updates at Windows
Updates. In the future use something like Ghost to image your system
partition for a very quick restore. It comes with Norton Systemworks. ---
