Error Message when trying to open My Computer, Control Panels

When I go to click on My Computer and the Control Panels path, my XP computer boots me out and tells me that an error has occured and I cant get in either. This has happened at the sametime I loaded SBC DSL. I also have the error happening when I click on Internet Explorer. Can anyone shed some light on this?
