Hi!
I'm using WinXp SP2.

While i try to open My computer or control panel from start menu it gives me
error as "This file does not have any program associated with it to perform
this action. Create the association in Folder options control panel."

But if i goto start-->run-->explorer it opens a explorer from where i can
access my computer.

Please help me resolve this, Also let me know if you need any more
information.

Thanks in advance.

This used to work, right? What happened as best you can recall?

Let's start with Control Panel.

If you go to Start, Settings and put your mouse on Control Panel, do
you at least get a list of Control Panel programs to run
(Accessibility Options, Add Hardware, etc.)?

Is the problem that when you try to choose one of the CP options from
the list you get this message or do you see the message when you go to
Start, Settings and put your mouse on Control Panel before you even
see the list?

For a test to be sure there is nothing wrong with the CP programs
themselves, go to Start, Run and enter:

control access.cpl <enter>

and then just:

access.cpl <enter>

Report back what happens in both cases.

Do you have a My Computer icon on your desktop? Can you double click
that and open it? Does it work right if you right click the desktop
icon and choose Open or Explore?

Tell us what happens.

Hi Jose

Thanks for ur reply.

Yes it was working before...conficker.a infected system and after cleaning
its not working now.

yes after pointing on control panel in start menu i can see list, and they
works after clicking them.

but if i set control panel as link not menu (Under Start Menu settings) and
now if i click on control panel by clicking control panel in start menu it
gives error.

After entering both the commands it opens up up the app..no problem.

If i click My computer on desktop it opens but if i click My computer in
start menu it does not open it gives specified error.

Also if i use Window+E shortcut key to open explorer it gives same error.

I've noted that when error box comes it does not have any title on title bar.

Let me know if u need any more details.

Let me see if I understand your problem (after much digging)...

You are NOT using the Classic start Menu for XP - you are using the
regular XP Start menu.

When you Customize your Start menu, under Advanced, you can have CP
and My Computer set to Display as a link or Display as a menu.

You would like these to Display as a link, but when you choose that
method, you get the error on these two options.

If you set these to Display as a menu, both options work okay, but you
would rather to Display as a link.

It used to work as a link, but you discovered conficker and removed it
and these two items no longer work. (The conficker was in the news
yesterday - again). Maybe it is related, maybe not.

Am I right so far?

There are other items in the Start menu that are links or menus. Do
they all work when set to links? Can you set them to display as links/
or menus and switch back and forth with no problems? If you set
everything do display as a link, is your problem just with CP and My
Computer or are there problems with other options when they are set to
display as a link?

Try booting in Safe mode and see if things works okay when set to
Display as Link. Switch back and forth between Link and Menu while in
Safe mode and see if it works properly or not. Boot in regular mode -
still broken?

If you do not have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free) download it,
install, update, scan. If you already have it, update it and run it
again. The scan can take a while, so I will wait for that.

You can tell me about the other stuff ASAP while waiting on your scan.

I have a similar problem. I keep looking at that stupid application
on-line and so far no changes to its status.

Which stupid application is that ;)

We never heard back from the OP, so maybe you can move this along.

My thought is the OP is NOT using the Classic Start menu.

If you are NOT using the Classic Start menu, look in your Start Menu,
Properties, Advanced. In the Start menu items section. find the
Control Panel and My Computer sections. You can choose Display as a
link or Display as a menu.

Just work on one or the other for now. If it is Display as link,
change it to Display as a menu and see if that works. Switch it back
and try again. Does it only complain when it is set to Display as a
link and work okay when set to Display as a menu?

Start , programs , right click on the program , and see if the
shortcut is giving the correct program path .
