ERROR MESSAGE when installing MS-DOS or 16 bit progam.....

Hello Help & Support, I'm having problems trying to re-install several
programs. I keep getting that error message: Winnt\system32\autoexec.nt is
not suitable for running MS_DOS and MS applications.....!

I've tried applying the FIXES as listed in article 324767.... BUT I ran
across a problem...

I expanded the config.nt and autoexec.nt and command.com files, but when I
restart I get the following error dialog box: Win 16 subsytem was unable to
enter protect mode - DOSX.exe must be in your autoexec.nt and present in
your path. - - HUH...!!!! This isn't on the instructions?????????

Problem #1: the quik fix does not work and I have to go on to THE NEXT
STEPS...

I followed the article up to point #11 and I'm wondering WHY I would need to
add a Config string for a Creative Labs Sound Blaster????????????

I get LOST at points # 15 where it says to Right Click the
%SYSTEMROOT%\system32 folder and then click on paste..... HUH....! There
is NO folder named %SYSTEMROOT%

What does it mean...!

Please clarify the instructions...!

Thanks...

Hi,

I really can't halp you with your issue, but the %SYSTEMROOT% is a variable.
It means the root of your system directory, meaning in most cases c:\windows\.
%SYSTEMDRIVE% for example means the drive your system is installed on,
usually c:.

In your case you would have to rightclick the "c:\windows\system32\ directory.

Try it for sure, go to start -> run -> type in: %SYSTEMROOT% and click on
ok. Your windows explorer should open in the c:\windows\ folder.

Hope this helps a little. :)

A small technical point. Windows is on the BOOT drive. C:\ is the System Drive (ie where NTLDR is). The names don't match the variable names.

This can be caused by a trojan.

Update your anti virus software and run a full system scan.

Copy the autoexec.nt file from C:\Windows\Repair to C:\Windows\System32.
And set Attributes for autoexec.nt to Read-only.

Read-only
[[Specifies whether this file is read-only, which means that it cannot be
changed or accidentally deleted.]]

1. Right click the file.
2. Properties.
3. Select: Read-only.
4. Click: Apply.
5. Click: OK.
