AUTOEXEC.NT error

When trying to open/install a 16-bit database program I like so many other
poster here get the following message:

c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.

I have tried to apply the fixes recommended in the article:

"Error Message When You Install or Start an MS-DOS or 16-Bit Windows Based
Program"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324767

When I attempted the first in the Run/cmd, I entered the first line (expand
D:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt), I got "No destination
specified for: expand D:\i386\config.nt_c:\windows\system32\config.nt"

The Config.nt and Autoexec.nt already read correctly.

When I looked for Command.com, I found a "Command" application and a "Copy
of Command" application. When I opened Command, I got an error:
C:\system32\Command.com
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.

What's next?

Angler, did you read your own post? If what you typed IS correct then YOU
made a typo.

Here's what you wrote:

"expand D:\i386\config.nt_c:\windows\system32\config.nt"

Now you will notice that there's no space between the config.nt_ and c:\ so
windows is taking it all as one string of text.

A THOUSAND APOLOGIES, ADAM SAHIB, followed by a thousand thank yous.
In about 20 attempts I still didn't see that space. Neither did my wife who
is much more comfortable in the Wintel world than I, the Mac addict.

Now the 16-bit error is gone, but when I try to install the program, I now
get: "Cannot find SHELL.DLL"

Ok, so we're getting somewhere now :) and it's ok I understand the Mac
mindset "plug it in, it works" ...where's the fun in that?! ....

anyhoo

shell.dll can be found in your windows\system and windows\system32
directory, if the system cannot locate it click on Start > Run and type "sfc
/scannow"
