Error message when Desktop appears

Hi, my Dad's got a problem. Every time he starts his PC he
gets the following error message:
memory access violation in module kernel32 at 3997:16325575

He's not all that computer savvy and says that he recently
got a mail from 'microsoft' - not sure if this was bogus
and he installed something by mistake?

Any help appreciated!

The last time I saw that - it was the Swen Virus.

Hope you've got back ups of all your personal files.
Good luck. I ended up having to erase my cousin's computer and reinstalling.
Hope you are luckier than that.
