Message Printing Problem

Frog

Hi,

I am attempting to find an answer to a problem for a friend. It seems
that he receives messages from one particular sender that appears on the
screen in normal character size but prints at a smaller size. He is
asking me why this is happening. Can anybody help me with an answer?

Below is the exchange I had with my friend.

Thanks for any help sent my way on this subject.

Once again I need our help with computer stuff. Ann's
brother-in-law in Chicago sends a message every week. It appears just
fine while I am reading it on the screen, but when printed it prints in
small print?? If I "reply" to his message, he has the same problem. If
I "create" a message it appears and prints just fine on his end. He
uses JUNO and I have Verizon. I have done as much checking (obviously
very little) as I can to see how I can correct that. He is almost
computer illiterate, so we are a less than educated pair when it comes
to computers. Can you assist us?

Ken,

Not sure I can help with this problem--but will do what I can.
I have already looked through all of the information I have on hand
here with no solutions found. I was about ready to put your note on the
newsgroup to see what guidance I could get from there, if that is okay
with you. If so, I will need a little more information from you before
I can proceed. Here is what I need:

Windows operating system - XP or what ever
E-mail software in use - Outlook Express or what ever
Printer make - HP or what ever

I may be back for more information after I put this on the
news group.

My operating system is XP, I really do not know what his operating
system is.

I use Outlook Express but he uses JUNO (I know that is not a mail
generator, but that is what he tells me)

My printer is an HP5440

To the best on my knowledge, his is the only email that prints that way.

There are a few Printer, and Page Setup settings that can cause that.
One happens if the option to "Fit to width of screen" or "Scale to fit"
is selected. (The designation depends on the printer manufacturer and
the software provided.) If too many characters are on a line, the only
way to make them fit is to size down. Two solutions would be to:

- turn off the "Fit to width of screen" option. Of course, it could
take twice as much paper this way; a second sheet for each page would
handle the extra width of the email.

- print in Landscape Mode. That can be a Page Setup option, or it can
be set in Printer Properties. Landscape mode might be remembered by the
email program. Landscape mode probably won't be remembered by Printer
Properties through the email program. Landscape mode will be remembered
if set in Printer Properties under Control Panel, but then all printouts
are in Landscape mode. I always turn on Print Preview so I can see any
possible problems before wasting paper.

If Juno software would let him lower the characters (columns) per line,
that might be the solution.

I don't use Juno, but I have a friend who does, and in doing a little
research to help him with an email issue I discovered that quite a few
technically savvy folks have the opinion that Juno software sucks.

Probably the most straightforward way to deal with your friend's problem
is to have him select all the text in the email, copy it, and then paste
it WordPad, Word, another word processing application, or even Notepad.
In the event that Juno doesn't have menu items for select and copy, the
keyboard shortcuts CTRL-A (select all) and CTRL-C (copy the selection)
should work.

Once in the word processing app, he can change the font size (and font)
as desired and then print it.

I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this subject. I
suggested to Ken that he should ask his brother-in-law to do the following:

Send a message that contained 40 characters or less on each line, and
end each line with "Enter" as a test message.

His brother-in-law did this and the message arrived and printed normally
(no small print). Thus, I believe there must be some setting on the
brother-in-law's system that requires adjustment. Since I know nothing
about his system or Juno, I believe I will consider this help request
closed.

Thanks for helping me.
