Windows XP Error message in windows operating systems

Hi,

Whenever i try to access any of the windows operating systems i get the following error message this includes in system restore, help, windows live, internet.....

"system restore has encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for any inconvenience"

I now cannot access anything, can anyone please help.
