Error message: "duplicate name exists on the network"

I just installed Windows 2K in a clean machine (I format the hard disk
during installation). However, I use the same computer name as it was in the
previous OS. The problem is when I log in everytime now, it will pop up a
dialog saying "A duplicate name exists on the network." I tried to change
the computer name but I failed to do that.

Any ideas? and workarounds to the problem? Thanks!

There is most likely an entry in WINS or DNS that points to the old machine
name. Just delete that record. Also did you rejoin the domain with the same
computer name?

have you cleared the entries for your old machine name in the WINS
databases?

Have you applied all the updates and service packs (currently SP4) yet?

on your server (assuming you have WINS installed)

Start
Run
type
winsmgmt.msc
click OK

the WINS Manager will open

click on your server
right click on Active Registrations
select Find by Owner
select All owners (if the options is there)

find the name of your machine in the list and delete it
