Microsoft Update... same for you?

My company doesn't allow me to update via the Update website -- they push
updates to me as approved. Obviously this doesn't yet include Defender.
There's no way I can get to the Update website without circumventing our
internal processes and I don't feel like doing that.

I think you have probably stated your situation accurately. If your company
uses WSUS to distribute approved patches internally, you are going to depend
on their having approved the new class of Windows Defender signature
updates, and allowed the individual patches to be distributed.

I've not experimented with manual distribution of the signatures. I do note
that they exist as a .MSI file in the Windows Defender install folder, among
other places.

RE: Error 0x80040154 class not registered

I am getting the following error message in the event log - any idea what it
means and is there a way to resolve?

Event Type: Error

Date: 2/26/2006
Time: 1:24:20 PM
User: N/A
Computer: W90WC207322KC
Description:
Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server using

The user is Unavailable/Unavailable, SID=Unavailable.

This error seems to point to the user being on a network where updating is
controlled by the administrators, and updates to Windows Defender are not
availble via WSUS. Does that description fit?

Bill,

I have an online support contact at Microsoft who offered to help me resolve
error 0X80040154 error that I am receiving. I have Win2000 Pro SP4. My
schedule and circumstances do not allow me to provide the information
requested on a timely basis.

There are multiple people who have posted that they are receiving the error
0X80040154 on system similar to mine. I would love to help to resolve this
problem.

Are you getting this error and would you be willing to pick-up the problem
filed with Microsoft or do you know another person who is getting the error
that you would recommend.

If you are interested in helping or have someone else in mind, please email
me at (e-mail address removed) so I can put you in contact with the Microsoft
rep and let you know where I left off.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Bill

I'm afraid not--I'm just following this in the groups. I see perhaps half a
dozen people with a similar issue, and some have resolved it one way or
another--it's not an easy thing to count.

So--I can't reproduce this one myself, and thus wouldn't be much use to your
contact.

I've posted all the information I have about this error in various
threads--I don't have anything further to add at this point.

Do you know or have you read how to download the WD definitions and then
manually apply definitions (updates)? If so, please post specific
instructions on how or where to obtain information. Also, how do you know
what version of the WD update definitions are currently loaded in WD program?

Not the best answer, but maybe a work around until error resolution.

Also, if you are aware of anyone who would want to work directly w/
microsoft contact on the 0x80040154 error, please refer to me so I can pass

I don't have a step-by-step on updating manually.

All I know about the version information is from looking at the home page of
Windows Defender.
I'm not sure what you are working towards here?
