In the Windows Defender (Beta 2) window, I see the sollowing message:
Windows Defender definitions haven't been updated in 42 days.

I get the following message when I click the "Check for Updates" button
associated with this message:

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update.
0x80040154. Class not registered.

Any ideas?

Hello Dreamchaser,
Follow these steps, even though the original cause of the problem appears
not to apply.

Go to Windows Update and check for available updates

Hi Engel,

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried it without any luck. Then I tried the
Windows Update and that didn't work either. And this used to work until a
month ago. I am convinced that the Windows Update access is disabled by Group
Policy settings on my corporate network. Thanks again for your suggestion.

Dreamchaser,

I have the same issue with my Windows defender. My computer is at home so
there is no group policy settings on my end and it still will not update. I
was hoping to find a solution here. I have uninstalled and reinstalled WD and
still have the same issue. I am lost!!!

I have two at home with 2000 SP4. One did this the other did not. I went to
windows updates and did a check, I noticed "BITS" download updated Windows.
After that the error went away and Windows defander updated fine.

Go to knowledgebase article at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326686
(or search for keyword "kb326686" at microsoft.com).

Although I have Windows 2000, the instructions under Windows 2000 section
did not work for me. Being a desperate sort of person, I followed instruction
in the section "For users running Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition"
and Windows Update worked! It installed a bunch of security updates as well
as an update to Windows Defender (Beta 2). Now I find that my definitions are
up to date!

See if this works for you guys.
