Can someone point me in the right direction as to what is causing this.

##############

AMLI : ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO address (0xcfc),
which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to
system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical
assistance.

Your BIOS is trying to access a protected access range. If you are
able to update your BIOS on-line, do so. Otherwise contact your
system vendor as per the error message.

Steve, you need to contact whoever sold you the machine or, failing
that, the manufacturers. Give them the same info you have given us.
This is a known problem. For further information, see

My system is effectively self built, as the case and power supply is all
that remain of the system I brought 7 years ago.

I can't profess to understand all of the info on the page link you supplied.
Is there a simple way to resolve this? Can I turn off ACPI in the BIOS or
will that cause more problems than it solves? Or am I looking at changing
the motherboard?

Long term a motherboard change is an option, but ideally I want to fix this
short term..

You may run into problems with plug and play devices, but if you can
turn off ACPI, give it a try. You might contact the motherboard
manufacturer and see what they have to say. Have you made a recent
software/hardware change to your system? I wonder why this this
problem has only come to light now?
