Error Code 39 on DVD & CD drives - tried all previous suggestions

I have an XP Home SP2 computer here that was recently repaired from a
serious virus & spyware infestation. Somewhere in the course of repair I
lost access to the DVDRW and CDROM drives. Device Manager shows Error Code
39 on both of them. I have tried the following fixes:

1. Uninstalled devices through Device Manager, then Scan for Hardware
Changes to reinstall them
2. Uninstalled devices through Device Manager, then rebooted to reinstall
them
3. Edited the registry to delete the entries for "Upper Filters" and "Lower
Filters" as per the MS KB articles, then rebooted
4. Ran SFC to restore all system files
5. Uninstalled & reinstalled Roxio Easy Media Creator 7
6. Reinstalled motherboard chipset drivers from Sony

All other devices are functioning normally. I looked at the log files for
the antivirus & antispyware scanners to see if there were any system files
which were quarantined and the only one I could find was NDIS.SYS. I copied
this file from the Windows\i386 folder back into the
Windows\System32\Drivers folder which restored all network adapters but did
not affect the conflicts for the DVD & CD drives.

I feel like I'm one step away from getting this system back up and running
again and am praying I don't have to resort to using the system recovery
disks as there is a great deal of additional software I would have to
reinstall. Any additional suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Oh, and I should mention as well that the drives work fine outside of
Windows. BIOS recognizes them, and I can boot to them.

One question that should be answered is 'where were the replacement drivers
stored when you had the virus?'. You may have corrupt copies of the files in
some driver storage area that is also corrupt. If you have a regular setup CD
for XP, do a Repair setup to replace the drivers from the original copy.

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an

program in Windows XP: "error code 31"
You receive an "error code 39" error message.

Code 39
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Recommended resolution
Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file
that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry
point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall
or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
Troubleshooting Wizard.

That sounded like a great plan, Mark, until I encountered the error "The
file 'asms' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 CD is needed" error. I
understand from Microsoft's KB that this means the CD drive is inaccessible.
It worked fine to boot into the Pre-installation Environment but clearly
whatever's damaged is bad enough that I cannot use Repair. Unfortunately,
I'm now stuck in a loop when I reboot and cannot even get back to where I
was before. Sigh. I guess it's time to move all user data off the drive and
start fresh with the recovery disks. I really hoped not to have to do this.
Thanks anyway.
