Error Code 39 on CD & DVD drives - tried MS KB fixes

I have an XP Home SP2 computer here that was recently repaired from a
serious virus & spyware infestation. Somewhere in the course of repair I
lost access to the DVDRW and CDROM drives. Device Manager shows Error Code
39 on both of them. I have tried the following fixes:

1. Uninstalled devices through Device Manager, then Scan for Hardware
Changes to reinstall them
2. Uninstalled devices through Device Manager, then rebooted to reinstall
them
3. Edited the registry to delete the entries for "Upper Filters" and "Lower
Filters" as per the MS KB articles, then rebooted
4. Ran SFC to restore all system files
5. Uninstalled & reinstalled Roxio Easy Media Creator 7
6. Reinstalled motherboard chipset drivers from Sony

All other devices are functioning normally. I looked at the log files for
the antivirus & antispyware scanners to see if there were any system files
which were quarantined and the only one I could find was NDIS.SYS. I copied
this file from the Windows\i386 folder back into the
Windows\System32\Drivers folder which restored all network adapters but did
not affect the conflicts for the DVD & CD drives.

I feel like I'm one step away from getting this system back up and running
again and am praying I don't have to resort to using the system recovery
disks as there is a great deal of additional software I would have to
reinstall. Any additional suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Forgot to mention that both drives are functioning normally outside of
Windows. The BIOS sees them and I can boot to them.

Look at http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Creator/EEZ000005
"Roxio Knowledgebase
CD/DVD drives missing after installation"

for utilities that are intended for such problems.

If that doesn't work try uninstalling Easy Media Creator THEN making the
filter deletions in the registry. Then install the drivers (by this
point the error 39 SHOULD go away) and reinstall Easy Media Creator last.

Robert,

Thanks for your reply. I have done exactly as you suggested, first tried the
download from that Roxio article (with Roxio installed), rebooted, no
change. Then I uninstalled Roxio, rebooted, installed the chipset drivers,
rebooted, no change. Error code 39 is still there. I installed the Roxio
patch intended for when Roxio is NOT installed, rebooted, and still no
change.

I would have thought if I was missing a system file related to the detection
and operation of optical drives, the System File Checker would have found it
and restored it. This all came about when I was doing virus and spyware
repairs. Used Avast 4 boot-time scan first, and I think it was during this
phase of repair that I lost access to the drives. I checked the log of the
scan and apart from NDIS.SYS which was quarantined (and I replaced as
mentioned below) the only other system file which was affected was the
paging file (pagefile.sys) which was deleted, but I know that gets recreated
upon next reboot (which it was).

Are there any other suggestions to try? There has to be some other method
besides full system recovery, I just know it...

Alas, a suggestion to try using the Repair function on the XP CD left me in
even more of a limbo..after backing up data I'll have to use the Sony
recovery disks after all. Thanks anyway.
