Error Code 0X80240029 Solution

Amen Bill,

I just finished my reply to Tom a moment ago and now see yours.

This file may be safe "now", but what about Friday when we all stop taking
about it.

"IF" I was going to attack the WD Newsgroup, this is just the way I would do
it.
Well, actually I would post everyday for a week first and give all kinds of
usefull information so I looked like a really nice and helpful fella.

Not only will I not refer people to it, I will tell them to avoid it like
the plage.
If an established member of this group wants to download and investigate the
file and then post a copy at an establish site, that's another matter.

Keep Looking out for us Uncle Bill,
Some of us are still Babes in the woods,
And there be, Lions, and Tigers, and Bears... Oh My!

Great love and affection,
?:)

Now I have taken a closer look I agree with you Tom and take back what I said
in my previous post. In fact its doing nothing more than has been previously
suggested (at one time or another) on these NGs over the past year but on a
grander scale. Nothing to worry about.

I was just sharing my response from Microsoft and that it worked for me. I
spent a total of 3 1/2 hrs with Microsoft and spent time with three
technicians (???) and this was the resolution they gave me. In fact they
said they had not heard of this problem before and I referrred them to the
newsgroup where one went and said, "son of a gun" and they did say they were
going to add to Knowledge Base. Everyone is free to do as they wish. I was
just trying to share my experience which was good. Good Luck All!

Hi KayFry,

Thank you for letting us know, there is a program "Dial a Fix" that does
almost the same (and more) that we most of the time here suggest to use
in several cases, this .bat file does the same in a Dos box. I think
somebody of MS wrote it to avoid using third party programs! ;)

Ok thanks again,

Regards >*< TOM >*<

KayFry,

Thank you for joining the fray.
As you can see you post has caused quite a stir.
If you have been viewing this thread since this afternoon hopefully you have
found it amusing.

As you can also see posting a link as you did is not really the best way to
deal with this kind of situation. It did, and should have arroused,
questions.

I posted an interesting reflection on it in Annoucements (by mistake, but I
blame the Sherry [read the post for an explanation], it should have been in
this thread).

If you could give us some contact info for the people at MS that pointed you
to that site it would be useful. My guess is that the file was set up for
your benefit and that they did not intend for it to be posted it publicly.
If that is the case they should have told you that, as I am sure MS does not
encourage people to click on links randomly found in newsgroups. Hopfully
the link will be taken down and replaced with something more "open".

Thanks for your intent to be helpful,
I'm still not going to the site, hope you understand, but giving you the
benefit of the doubt, thanks for the effort.

Stick around, help us to get to know you.
We really are a good bunch of people,
but we are cautious.

Thank goodness someone may have found the solution for this problem. I'm no
computer wiz and I cannot figure out how to uninstall Windows Defender. Vista
is very different from XP. Thanks.

Hi Tim,

You are right to be suspicious to every link that comes in a newsgroup,
I click on all of them, to find out what it is about, that way I never
got an infection on this site, but without PC-Cillin I should! Also I
understand all your assumes. But if I must be on the Internet with 12
antispy/virus program's and must be suspicious every moment I put on my
home PC, I sold the damn thing and went to the Bingo every night! I like
to assume the good site of people till the opposite is proved. That’s
why I check this links in the newsgroup and warn if there is something
wrong, like I did before at some items. Don’t like to crucify before
something is proved wrong. This way nobody wants to share the things
they find out. There was here somebody that wrote a little program to
make a link on your Desktop to see with 1 click all the WD logs on
the screen with “system.logâ€, wrote it put it on his siteand the same
thing here happened, so after 1 day he got enough of it and closed his
site and stopped to suggest to use it. Then a lot off people start to
ask where the nice program was??? Gone and somebody that maybe could
write more of this little utils for free, is stopped to do so.
So take a other sherry and loosen up a little bit! ;)

Kind regards >*< TOM >*<

Yes, I understand your bewilderment. I must admit it does seem to be an
unorthodox solution of the type not associated with MS. I would have thought
something like a KB article together with a solution/fix or tool to address
this specific issue if they consider necessary. Will you be investigating?

Belinda- Windows Defender is a part of the operating system in Vista. There
is no uninstall--it isn't even an option which can be turned off. To
disable it, open Windows Defender, go to Tools Options, and near the very
bottom--scroll down--there is an option to turn it off.

However, I'd sure like to hear more about why you would want to do this? I
see some confusion between User Account Control and Windows Defender in
people's minds--so if there is a particular symptom or dialog that you feel
turning off Windows Defender will prevent, give us some specifics--turning
off Windows Defender may not change things.

Bill-Thank you for your response. I'm not a computer whiz by any stretch. I
am having the same problem that it seems countless others are having with WD
and the error code 0x80240029. I read the post from KayFry that outlines a
solution from Microsoft. It states that first you must uninstall Windows
Defender. Well I was just wondering how to go about doing that because I am
unable to update WD and am getting several warning popping up that my system
is in danger. Windows Update seems to work just fine but does not update WD.
I've tried every approach I can think of and was hoping this was indeed the
solution. Thanks again.

Hey all,

I just have a question, because i'm getting the 0x80240029 Windows Defender
Update Definitions error, & I already have Trend Micro PC-Clinn 2007, do I
need 2 try and fix this Windows Defender problem at all, or should I just use
Trend Micro???

Thanks...

Hi Matt,

As a beta tester of PC-Cillin i could tell you that after a lot of
testing that The Venus Spytrap in Pc-Cillin is always alerting before WD
and do a lot of stupid things to test! Also i dont run at the moment
nothing else. Just CCleaner to get rid of the junk. And just for testing
i download and run Adaware and Spybot and WD now and then to scan but
they never found anything, so PC-Cillin keeps it clean even i do a lot
of stupid things! ;)

Bill - Thanks so much! Your solution to uncheck all boxes in the MS Auto
Update box (which I found on another page somewhere) worked for me. Is this
a long- or short-term fix? I assume the latter, meaning it will need to be
repeated frequently, correct?

Also (and hope asking about this isn't out of line here), is MS security
package good enough to stand alone? If not, any $70 or less recommenations
for Vista (firewall, spyware, virus protection, adware) - suite or component?
Speed (scanning and startup) are concerns but secondary to performance.
Thanks in advance.

Fireplug1 here and if you are looking for the complete fix for error code
0x80240029 all you have to do is follow this link and then follow the
instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/934562/en-us
The problem is not Windows Defender itself but just one folder, called
softwaredistribution, once you start in safe mode, rename the folder to
softwaredistribution.old and re-boot, and fix is now complete. No need to
uninstall product, that is another headache, in which the problems multiply...
