Error at logon screen prevents access, Error code 0x80040057 pops up

A friend is having a problem. He says:

"Several days ago, my Windows XP system failed a chkdsk
at startup with the message "cannot open volume for
direct access". No additional error messages were
displayed. The logon screen came up but, when any profile
was selected, the message "A problem is preventing
Windows from accurately checking the license for this
computer Error Code: 0x80040057" appeared. I searched the
MS knowledge base and came up with only one reference to
the first error that said Microsoft is aware of the
problem but gave not fix info. On the second, I found no
specific cross reference to the error code but did find
similar issues described along with instructions for
restoring the license files from the setup disk using the
recovery console. I followed the instructions and still
am getting the error. I also tried doing an in-place
upgrade with no luck. I did chkdsk from recovery console
and found no errors. I also installed an alternate boot
on a partition located on the same drive, and was able to
bring up windows with no problem. I then ran a number of
disk utilities etc with no issue. I even captured an
image of the partition, deleted and formatted it then
restored it and still get the cannot open volume error.

Can anyone please give some insight into what caused this
and if there are any possible fixes or workarounds?
Thanks in advance! "

Can anyone help?

Regards,

Gareth

If...

By writing "came up with only one reference" you mean the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

KB823439 - "Cannot Open Volume for Direct Access" Error Message
When Chkdsk Runs at Startup
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?Product=winxp&scid=kb;en-us;823439

Then...

To quote Jerold Schulman - Windows: General MVP, from
his "JSI, INC_ - Tips & Tricks" web page on the subject:

"There is currently no fix for this problem. When a solution becomes
available, Microsoft will probably release a hotfix, or provide a
workaround. If a hotfix becomes available, Microsoft will include the
fix in a Windows XP service pack. NOTE: You may have success if
you schedule Chkdsk to run at startup and use the /X switch, which
will force a dismount."

For the entire article see the "JSI, INC_ - Tips & Tricks" web
page on the subject:

JSI Tip 7079_ You receive 'Cannot open volume for direct access'
when Chkdsk runs during Windows XP startup
http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBO/tip7000/rh7079.htm

Else....

If Jerold's suggesting to force a dismount does not work you may
want to try the resolution given by the following Web Site, which
implicates 3rd party kernel-mode drivers:

Computer Technical Support Forums
All Forums | SOFTWARE SUPPORT | Operating Systems: Microsoft
MyTechSupport_ca - Cannot open volume for direct access
http://www.mytechsupport.ca/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3503

In brief, MyTechSupport says to:

Run msconfig. Select a Diagnostic Startup of Basic Devices and
Services Only. Use the method of your choice to schedule chkdsk
to run when you restart your computer. And then reboot.

Else...

If Zone Alarm could be the cause of the problem then perhaps
one of the three following suggestions could help:

You should have no problems with Zone Alarm if you have the latest
version. I had problems with chkdisk and defrag when I first installed v5
of Zone Alarm but on the 23rd of June was offered an update which I
downloaded and installed and that cleared up the problems.
The version number is 5.0.590.043

Are you running third party firewall such as zone alarm?

If so I can provide one ZA answer that worked for me - in ZA:

You can go into ZoneAlarm (ZA) 5, go to the overview tab then preferences

UNcheck the PROTECT ZA CLIENT

That is what is protecting your firewall from malware and locking the hard
drive from a scan

Do the chkdsk then follow same steps and reenable for max protection

Does anyone else have any new information on this problem? My brothe
is having the same error message and it is preventing him from gettin
into his system at all, even safe mode won't run and the 'restore t
previous working setup' (or whatever it is, I have only spoken to hi
on the phone and not seen it myself) still won't boot up anything othe
than the error message and a complaint about not having enough Virtua
Memory. He has plenty of disk space and VM is set at the recommende
settings as far as he remembers.

Prior to this problem occuring, he was getting a message about a Troja
Horse called Downloader.Agent.AI being found in WinHost32.exe Th
message stopped popping up so he stupidly ignored it, only to lose hi
entire system a week later with the problems above mentioned. :aaa

One option he is being given through a recovery floppy disk, is t
format the drive and restore the software his computer left the factor
with. The problem with this method is that he was never given th
WinXP CDRom so we figure he won't be able to re-install anythin
without that. Is this the case? The information which comes with th
recovery diskette only says to follow the prompts and doesn't mentio
if an install CD will be required.

I hope you can help :

See the following article for a possible solution:

"Error Code: 0x80004005” error message when you install Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=306081

If this does not help and a reinstall is the only option, have your brother
contact the PC vendor for the proper use of the restore CD.
