Error 3125 - not a valid short name

I installed Vista Ultimate, joined it to our domain and setup my domain
account as a local administrator on vista. When I try to run ANY setup
files, I receive an error 3125: (username) is not a valid short name. If I
run ANY setup files logged on as another local admin or domain admin,
everything works fine. I tried turning off the UAC, but that did not fix
anything. Any suggestions?

You might want to try asking this question in the vista.networking_sharing
newsgroup.

Hello,
What was the name used?
Does that name show under \users\ properly?
Open an elevated cmd prompt and change directory to c:\
run dir \users\*. /a and report back the output.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello,
Nothing in there look unusual.
Let's see what the shortnames look like
run dir \users\*. /a /x

Then let's look at

dir \users\mike_shellenberger\*. /a /x /s >dirlist.txt
Look at this for anything that looks unusual for a shortname.

Thanks,

Hello
I think it's the location of the dirlist.txt that it doesn't like. Even
though you are a domain administrator, I don't think by default you have
write access to that folder. You may need to pipe it to a location in
generated subfolder off the root of c drive.
Assuming the error message is incorrect, I am looking for a directory name
or rather a short name that appears to be invalid or contains invalid
characters. I haven't seen anything to so far.
The underscore shouldn't cause an issue and it generated a good shortname.
What application are you trying to run that is generating the error message?
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Nothing appears unusual in the generated file. My temp. workaround is to
make myself a regular user and use the domain admin account when installing
software. An example would be the new Cisco VPN client software that is
compatible with Vista. Any other suggestions to look at? It appears to me
to def. be permissions related in some way...

Hello,
If it's permissions and it may very well be that, we can test that by
opening an elevated cmd prompt while you are logged in with your account
and seeing if any applications are allowed to install then.
Right-click on a CMD prompt and choose run as administrator (you will have
to give it credentials, seeing if it's unique to the credentials for that
account. Since you are a standard user now, it should prompt for admin
credentials)
Then while in the cmd prompt, run setup and see if the behaviour is any
different of if there is a different error code.
The error code is unexpected for a permissions issue, but that doesn't
always mean that isn't the issue either.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
